HWDT

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust is dedicated to enhancing the knowledge and understanding of Scotland’s whales, dolphins and porpoises(cetaceans)and the Hebridean marine environment through education, research and working within local communities as a basis for the lasting conservation of local species and habitats.

Activities offered

HWDT survey the waters off the west coast of Scotland during the summer months on board the research vessel 'Silurian'. Twenty four species - nearly a third of the world total have been reported in this region, from the mighty Blue Whale to the tiny Harbour Porpoise. With such diversity, it's important to coherently collect sightings data that will contribute to increased knowledge of the study area. Not only do HWDT record sightings of cetaceans but also marine litter, helping to highlight growing environmental problems. HWDT welcome volunteers on board their research yacht 'Silurian' to assist with the research, learn a little sailing and enjoy exploring some of the remotest parts of the British Isles. HWDTs education team also have various volunteering opportunities available through-out the year. Please visit the volunteering section of the website for details.

We run activities for

HWDT run Marine Mammal Courses in the Spring. These are open to all who have a keen interest in Cetaceans. The course is a combination of presentations and practical experience on board 'Silurian' HWDT also welcomes volunteers to assist with the running of our busy visitor centre and administration offices. The education team at HWDT conducts a number of workshops, talks, and school visits throughout the year. You can arrange to have your group visit us or we can arrange to come to visit you. For a few weeks of the season 'Silurian' is transformed into a “floating classroom” to travel around schools and groups in the Argyll area. Alternatively it can be visited whilst moored in Tobermory harbour.

Location

The Visitor Centre is in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. The Centre provides access to computer systems for research and education, as well as being used to provide fun, educational games and activities for children and adults alike. There are interactive exhibits and a large reference library for research.
